As defined in the Longman Dictionary of contemporary English, the word ‘tread’ can be literally defined as walking. ‘Mill’, a verb, is defined as the action to crush grain, pepper etc in a mill. When putting two words together, we have treadmill. Literally from the two definitions, we could assume that ‘treadmill’ may simply mean walking in a somewhat similar way as to how people crush grain, pepper etc in a mill. So, one could barely imagine a person walking as if grinding something except not with the hands but legs. As in the Longman Dictionary of contemporary English, a treadmill is a piece of exercise equipment that has a large belt around a set of wheels, that you can walk or run while staying in the same place.

Manual Treadmills

Some time ago, treadmill worked manually where the speed of the equipment depends on the person doing the workout. The faster you tread, the faster it goes and vice versa. Thus, one is actually doing double the work where one not only does workout on oneself but also working out the machine by pulling its conveyor belt. That gave more strain to the body and feet as instead of treading normally, one will feel oneself pulling a heavy burden at the feet and it would tend to hurt the leg muscle more. Subsequently, instead of a healthy workout, one tends to hurt themselves, resulting in side effects such as cramps, muscle pain, back aches and etc if not tended properly.

Electric Treadmills

As the modern age creeps in to our lives, now we have the electric treadmill or motorized treadmill that moves using electric supply. Now, one will feel less strain at the feet while running on the treadmill as the electric supply charges the motor in the machine. The motor will later move the conveyor belt where one is running on. With this, instead of feeling as if pulling a heavy burden at the feet along while running, the moving conveyor belt complements the running pace, making running a more enjoyable activity. One feels as if being pushed slightly while running and kind of makes running easier and light. Nonetheless, all is only well if one is able to tune the speed of the conveyor belt to the speed that suits one the best, not too fast yet not too slow. If one does not do so, instead of complementing, the wrongly-tuned speed of the conveyor belt will become a burden.

The Benefits Of An Electric Treadmill

With an electric treadmill or motorised treadmill, one could even control the speed of running using buttons on the machine. When one wants to run faster, simply tune up the speed or tune down the speed when wanting to run at a slower pace. Thus, one electric treadmill fits all, where each one could tune the speed according to their own preference. Apart from that, with technology becoming more and more advance, buttons of an electric treadmill no longer only used to tune speed but also for other functions. There are buttons to check ones heart beat, the rate of fat burning and etc. Some electric treadmills even have manuals of instructions teaching users how to maximize their workout to achieve the best results they want based on their body conditions.

One need not have to go through the troubles of looking for the best running tracks or park to jog, or looking for company to jog together, or jogging under the sun or canceling jogging plan due to bad weather but by simply owning an electric treadmill at home. With an electric treadmill, the workout results are similar to jogging in the park or tracks but minus the minor troubles. With an electric treadmill, one will not need to strain the leg muscles as much as using a manual one like before with the comfortable, suitable speed, of course unless one wishes to challenge their own body limits.
